Simple answer is NO. Since they were designed to handle real money (in
and out) there is usually no way to even put on a service credit - the
game must actually be coined and played in a normal way. Ever win a
Jackpot in Vegas? They have YOU put YOUR coins in to clear the win off
the reels or Video Poker after a payout.
No hidden switches on the DBV. In fact, it can't even be replaced with a
simple switch to rack up credits since there is back and forth serial
comm. to the bill acceptor and the host slot board.
Depending on what brand and era you have, the coin comparator cannot
even be replaced with a simple coin mech. Since it triggers the
begining of the coin acceptance process which is completed with proper
timing of two optic channels.
Token in Token out is your best and only solution. Most hoppers are
easily converted from US Quarter to 0.900' tokens (not the larger
0.984'). Avoid thin ones as they will jam in worn out old knife style
hoppers. The cheap ones they make for the Japanese Pachislos would
probably be your most economical option. IF the unit has a coin
comparator in it, just replace the sample coin with your token. But for
this reason, you have to make sure that all the tokens are the same in
size and metal content. You might not be able to mix a 'grab bag' of
tokens. You will get a lot of rejects. The hopper doesn't care since
it is just based on diameter.
If you got Dollar or Nickel machines, you will have to replace the
hoppers, or at least the parts that make the hopper that style coin.
For slant tops with a coin elevator, you will need the correct elevator
for that coin and 0.900' tokens can be a problem jamming.
You can also set the denomination of a Quarter (Token) machine to think
it is a Nickel machine and then it will give you 20 credits for each
Bill inserted.
If it is a Bally machine, there was a guy/company in Ohio that was
making special roms for some of the Bally slots or Gamemakers that
allowed for credits. I think the Game Maker line of Video Poker has a
'Demo' setting that does run as free play.
